چکیده

THE RELATION of cationic distribution to the tonus of vascular smooth muscle has become of increasing interest during the past few years. Acute rises and falls of blood pressure induced by a variety of agents have been shown to be consistently accompanied by inverse shifts of sodium out of or into the extracellular compartment.' Tissue analysis has shown that these movements involve shifts of sodium into and out of vascular smooth muscle cells, usually, but not invariably, associated with inverse potassium transfers.' Manipulation of the ionic environment of vascular tissue either in vitro or in vivo produces well denned changes in the tonus of vascular smooth muscle and underlines the direct relationship between ions and tonus.' 6

Hypertension Caused by Salt Loading in the Dog

Experimental hypertension was produced in dogs by salt loading after renal mass had been surgically reduced to an estimated one-third normal. Salt loading was accomplished in one group of five dogs by administering isotonic saline in lieu of drinking water and in another group of six dogs by continuously infusing isotonic saline. Arterial pressure, cardiac output, heart rate, stroke volume, and...

Sodium, Potassium, and Peripheral Resistance in the Rat Tail.

• Induced changes in peripheral vascular resistance have been associated with changes in transcellular distribution of ions" but the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. We have suggested that transcellular redistribution of sodium may dominate that of potassium and perhaps of calcium but the evidence for this is indirect. For further study of the problem we have now turned to...

Evaluating the Serum Levels of Calcium, Chloride, Potassium and Sodium in the Stroke Patients

Backgrounds and Aims: Stroke incidence rate has increased during the past 2 decades. The question of whether calcium, chloride, potassium, sodium levels are associated with stroke has remained controversial. The present study aimed to evaluate the serum levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, and chloride within stroke patients. Materials and Methods: The study participants consisted of 5...
